Dr. Al-Abadi: The decline in participation in elections weakens their legitimacy and opens the way for minority rule and majority discontent

Al-Bayan Center for Studies and Planning hosted the head of Al Nasr Coalition, Dr. Haider Al-Abadi, in an intellectual dialogue session, today, Wednesday, within the activities of the Baghdad International Book Fair 2023.

Dr. Al-Abadi pointed out in the session, which was titled “Achieving Justice and the Administration’s Vision: The Challenges of Building the Iraqi State after Two Decades of Change,” that the decline in the participation rate in the elections weakens their legitimacy and leads to minority control in government, which increases the discontent of the majority.

He added: "Quotas are against the constitution, and they are a disease in the political system and culture. Fighting corruption socially comes first in order to eliminate it, as the culture that rejects its manifestations in all its forms must prevail, and parties are part of the society in the end".

Dr. Al-Abadi suggested that the chaos that occurred after 2003 did not help citizens develop democracy, to the point that oppression and unfair assault became part of public opinion, and he touched on the importance of working to change the citizen’s belief towards the state by changing the belief of the state itself.

Regarding the most prominent solutions to the problems that the country is suffering from today, Dr. Al-Abadi pointed out that creating confidence among citizens towards the political process to encourage them to participate widely in the elections is one of the most important steps that must be taken towards reform, in addition to addressing the problem of water scarcity and distributing wealth correctly and fairly.
